The 4th Annual Gobeshona Conference: Steps towards Action Based Research

The 4th Annual Gobeshona Conference was held from 8-11 January 2018 at Independent University, Bangladesh (IUB). Researchers, academics, and practitioners from different background presented their paper in these four days. At the inauguration ceremony, the keynote speech was presented by Dr. Alice Baillat who is research fellow at the French Institute for International and Strategic Affairs. She mentioned Bangladesh as a weak power leader. She stated that “By weak power, I mean the capacity of Bangladesh to transform its vulnerability into a comparative advantage and a diplomatic tool to increase its influence on negotiation processes. In other terms, the vulnerability of Bangladesh is positively correlated with its influence in climate negotiations, and is a lever for political action”. The core message of these four days conference was summarized in a single sentence by Dr. Saleemul Huq, Director, International Centre for Climate Change and Development (ICCCAD) which is “We need to shift from problem identification based research to solution-based research”.
